Phantom Railings

Phantom Railings is an interactive sound installation in Malet Street Gardens, whose railings were removed as part of the 1940s war effort and never replaced, leaving a line of iron stumps along the surrounding wall. Using sensor-based acoustic devices, the installation makes evident the absence of railings by creating a resemblance of the familiar sound produced by running a stick along an iron fence.

A wholly new work, commissioned for Camden New Wave by the artist behind ‘Phantom Railings’ – Catalina Pollak – will see choreographers Francisca Rivas and Pepa Ubera working in collaboration with TripSpace to create a unique interface between movement, sound and the built environment at Malet Street Gardens, site of the interactive acoustic installation. The music produced by this piece for eleven dancers, will be captured as a real-time score and streamed to the project´s website.

The performance will be followed by a public symposium at Senate House, which will look at the democratisation of parks and gardens that resulted from the removal of iron railings during the Second World War, to open a discussion about public space and accessibility in Bloomsbury and beyond.
